After a pretty epic journey across the country, (seriously you have no idea how big Australia is until you get here) I landed in Perth and Scott and Nina collected me from the airport and swooped me off for a pub dinner. My head was a bit all over the place with the time difference, seeing as I lost an hour when I landed in Sydney and gained 3 when I arrived in Perth. Basically I had no idea. After food we headed back to their flat where an early night was on the cards.
The next day Scott and I got the bus into town and Scott pointed out the sights of Perth. We went for milkshakes and sat in the sunshine before hitting a pub and having a good catch up. I had to shell out for a new ipod so a stiff drink was definitely needed! We headed home and chilled in their outside area until Nina came home and then we drove to an Indian restaurant to meet Nina's dad and have a meal where we did the standard thing and ordered way too much food. It was a good feed though!
The following day Scott and I had a lazy day just hanging out watching a few movies and having a few beers. It's one of those things you rarely get to do when travelling (well the movie part not the beer part) so was good to just have a time out. In the evening we got the train into town and went to a bar called Devilles. It reminded me of something out of pulp fiction, was very 1950's meets rockabilly. I could see why Scott and Nina came here a lot! This wasn't any ordinary night though, it was rock and roll karaoke night… the talent was actually pretty high which makes a change from a lot of the karaoke nights I've been too that's for sure.
After a multitude of drinks Nina convinced me to get up and sing Hole with her. As terrifying as it was it was actually quite fun. I dread to think how bad it was though! Nina got up again, this time with Scott, singing loveshack and it was so good everyone was giving them high fives afterwards. We decided to leave on a high so headed back home, ready for a good sleep after our stage appearances.
The day after I headed into town and to Avis to rent a car for a couple of days so I could do the drive down to Margaret River to visit my cousin Sam and her husband GB. I set off in my little Toyota Yaris and headed south. It was actually really nice driving, as apart from the 4x4 on Fraser Island I hadn't been behind the wheel since Hawaii. The drive took me about 3 ½ hours and when I arrived I was greeted by Sam and their beautiful dog Aggie. We had a good catch up and when GB got home we took Aggie to the beach which was beautiful, and they showed me where lots of land was destroyed by bush fires which was crazy to see.
In the evening they took me to a quirky little restaurant in town, and we ate some good food with wine from the winery GB works at. After so much goon it was amazing!! Definitely nice to drink a good wine again that's for sure.
The next day Sam and GB took me to the winery where GB works, and he gave me my own private tour and explained the process in how they make their wines which was all very interesting. It was a beautiful day and we had a lovely lunch at the restaurant that was there, with of course more wine, and some amazing food. I felt very pampered! We headed back to their house and carried on the drinking, which ended up in a ping pong tournament in their shed. I was of course awful and would always make my partner lose, but it was great fun! We headed to the comfy chairs and watched toy story 2 before calling it a night.
I got up early the next day and was fed a lovely breakfast (you don't realise how much you miss fruit until you're travelling!) before starting the drive back to Perth in order to get the car back in time. Scott and Nina collected me from the hire car company and we went out for a Mexican brunch which was definitely needed after the drive.
Nina drove us over to Kings Park where you have a view of the whole city which was pretty spectacular, and then we went to a beach and paddled our feet in the Indian ocean before driving up to Fremantle. We took a wander around the markets there selling pretty much everything, before going to a brewery called little creatures for dinner. This definitely seemed like the place to be, and their own beers were pretty awesome.
Another day and Scott and I headed into town so I could meet my mate Benji, someone I met whilst snowboarding in France a couple of years ago and who now lives in Perth. It was so good to see him! We had a few drinks and caught up in a very English pub that played English music which was pretty amusing. Soon we bid each other farewell and I stayed in town to get some last minute things before my flight the next day. It's amazing how much stuff you 'misplace' whilst living in hostels that's for sure. Back at home Scott, Nina and I had a bbq, even though it had started raining, and then settled down to watch Aladdin with some xmas pudding and custard. Just because we could.
Nina drove me to the airport for my morning flight and I said goodbye to them both at the terminal. I felt really emotional, not just saying goodbye to Scott and Nina but to Australia in general. I had such an amazing time there and met so many great people, there was never a time I felt alone.
Australia, I will be back!!!
