Helen and Dean - Choice, Bro.
Hi!
We have been super busy since our last post card, so here is a brief summary of the stuff we have been up to....
As you can see we are now in New Zealand. We finished Australia in Sydeny which we excellent fun. We did the bridge climb over the harbour which was probably the highlight of Sydney. You get a brilliant view of the city which was so cool! We also went to a few groovy bars and resterants which was a nice treat!
Then we flew to Christchurch in the south island of New Zealand. We met up with our friend from home, Amy, which has been loads of fun! We spend a few days hanging out in Christchurch then we hired a super cheep car and the three of us are now zooming round the south island.
On the first day we made a stop at Kaikora on the east coast. From here we took a boat out to see to go whale watching. It was amazing! We saw 5 Sperm Whales from really close (about 10/15 metres away I guess). They are so totally cool! We also saw another 5 or 6 in the distance - you can see the water from their blow holes from miles away!!!! We also saw a pod of dusky dolphins on the way back. There were about 150 dolphons, jumping out the water and zooming around in front of the boat - really spectacular sight!!!!
Then we went to the Malbrough Sound on the north coast of the south island. We went kayaking and tramping (New Zealand for hiking!) around here. The scenary is really excellent (mountains and beautiful estuaries) and there are not too many other people here - very peacful + quite.
Our next stop was Nelson which is a very funky town - nice and chilled out.
Then we did another kayak trip around the Able Tasman National Park. This was also brilliant fun going along the coast and stopping at isloated beaches. While we were having lunch on the beach we spotted a pod of Orca Whales passing by! This is apprently very rare - our guide has been working there 4 seasons and had never seen any before, so we were very lucky! We jumped back into the kayaks and headed out to get a better look - we managed to get about 20 metres away from them as they passed. There were probably about 30-40 in total and we saw a group of about 6 really close to us! They are an amazing sight - their dorsal fins are massive! They must be at least a metre high! It was so cool :)
After a whole day's kayak we were all super tired so we stayed on a boat in the park which was very exciting. I briefly bumped into a girl from my uni too, which was quite a surprise!
We had an early start the next day, tramping up a section of the Able Tasman costal path - on of New Zealands great walks. It was a cool walk but unfortunatly it did start to rain and by the end of the walk it was tipping it down! However we did get to use our rain macs which we have been carting all over the world so that was kind of exciting!!!!
Last night we stayed on a really nice farm. It had an open fire and the three of us got a room to ourselves, which made a nice change from the dorms we have in for the last week or so.
This morning we went around Buller Gorge and we all went across the zip line over the river here. It was pretty cool! In the next few days we will be going to Hokatika and climbing Fox Glacier.... very excited about this!
I think thats about it for now. Hope you are all well.
Cheers,
Dean and Helen
