The trip to Vang Vieng was interesting... in short, it was too many people squeezed into a mini-van.
We left our hotel by being picked up by a TukTuk...and had the displeasure of getting to sit next to a bit of a rude British girl. Stereotypical "female traveller" who clearly thinks the sun shines out of her backside. And of course she's just sooooo mad.
We were polite enough and said hello to everyone who got into the TukTuk and this girl made a rather loud comment about ginger people... pretty much slagging them off saying "if you have a kid called romeo, you wouldn't call it that if it was ginger would you? I mean, like a ginger minger!"
Hmmm.
Me and Luke just looked at each other and raised our eyebrows.
It took all of my energy not to poke my head out from around Luke and say "Yeah, that WOULD be stupid, it'd be like calling your blonde child Einstein, wouldn't it???" but I refrained.:-P lol.
(She was blonde by the way...I have nothing against blondes, some of my closest mates are blonde and I love them, but for the sake of this comment she made it made me want to say that...she wasn't even a natural blonde!)
Someone also needs to tell her you don't pronounce the "G" in minger, and that her accent is annoying as hell. But who am I to tell her that ;-)
We got into the mini van and due to Einstein and her mates pushing in front of us and the bus already being semi-full, we were on last (yay) and there was only ONE space at the back...ONE SPACE!
Where was I going to sit? How embarrassing! As if the previous comment from this girl wasn't enough...the driver pulled out a seat in the aisle and I ended up having to sit next to her and her friend.
When I sat down, Luke looked furious...he then said to me and I'm sure she heard "What the hell is her attitude for?!"
I asked him what she had said... and apparently when the driver pulled the seat out next to them for me she had said loudly "Great!!!"
Remind me why I didn't throw her out of the window again??
I don't know what I'd done to her...but if I knew what it was I woulda done it again.
Anyway, on to Vang Vieng...the important stuff.lol.
It was a really nice place, good to see and really pretty with the mountains... but to be honest, there was something very 'Magaluf' about it.
Full of Brits wanting to go out and get drunk, walking around in their bikinis and toplesss, even though there are signs up asking people not to do this as it is disrespectful to the locals...it's not hard to put a top on or a pair of shorts is it, really??
The bars were really cool and unique, one called Smile Bar which was like an outdoor bar, with hammocks to chill out in, fire shows going on and they give you free buckets if you arrive before 11pm aswell! Awesome!
We went easy on them though as we overdid it in Thailand on these buckets, lol so we had one and drank sensibly after that. (Your Mum would be proud of you Luke, Peter Barn-Owl didn't come out once! :-P)
We had a nice curry on the first night... we saw a local Indian place and just had to...we'd been craving a taste of Asia...haha... chicken sagwala and garlic bbq chicken curry...REALLY need to have one when we get home!!!
We also bumped into Jeff...haha! He was wandering around and had had a little bit to drink ;-) He said they had left the day before to come there, and we said we'd be in Smile Bar if he was heading there...but we didn't see him again.Haha.
We went to a bar to have food the next night and to watch the game...the girl who worked in the bar (who was British) told us the food was "totally amaaaaazing" ....
Luke had the tiniest bowl of spaghetti bolognese ever...hmm.:-/
Mine was nice though! hahah. Luke always gets the short straw.
We decided to move on to Luang Prabang after this and spent about 3 days in Vang Vieng....
It was good but is it possible for a place to be "too" touristy? I think the Magaluf vibe kinda ruined it a bit. But we had a good time there regardless.
