Medellin, Colombia
Our bus journey from Bogota to Medellin started surprisingly well! The tropical countryside was beautiful and it allowed us to see some of the local communities at work or play. Too good to be true of course! We soon came to a grinding halt for several hours thanks to a landslide that had literally happened moments before we were due to pass. We made sure to stay awake and alert as all the locals began to gather around our bus. They were, in fact, harmless but any unscheduled stops made us nervous due to all the Colombian bandit stories we've heard on our travels!
Despite another late night arrival, we felt far more relaxed pulling up to our hostel in Medellin. Located in a nice neighbourhood, our hostel was homey and secure. To the delight of Harry & Joe, it also had two beautiful dogs to welcome us! We ventured out for some food and immediately felt at home. It was hard to believe that Medellin was once considered the most murderous city in the world. Since Pablo Escobar, the most ruthless drug lord in the world, was gunned down and killed by Colombian police in 1993, the city has turned itself around. Gone are the days of drive by shootings and heads being found in trash cans! Medellin is now a vibrant, modern city full of big bosomed and big bottomed beauties! They love their plastic surgery and, of course, the boys love that they love their plastic surgery! Even their mannequins are super curvy!
On our first full day we caught the metro into the city centre to look around. It was buzzing and every other shop was selling bright, tight, Lycra, see-through, glittery clothes that seem to be so popular here. We headed to 'Zona Rosa' in El Poblado, a lovely area loaded with bars and restaurants. We lost hours drinking and eating the day away and soaking up the fiesta atmosphere that Colombia creates so effortlessly.
The following day we hopped back onto the metro to ride the famous cable car which travels up the mountain via the poorest slums in the city. It was an amazing, and above all, safe way to see Medellin properly! The slums were once home to Pablo Escobar and from where he later recruited his assassins. At the peak of the mountain is also a National Park where we sampled some lovely organic Colombian coffee before heading back to the magnet that is Zona Rosa!
We really enjoyed our few days in Medellin. The only thing we may have missed out on was the Escobar Tour, a tour of Pablos's former home and other landmarks, by the weirdly proud Escobar family! They were charging silly amounts though so we decided against it.....they must be striving to get back that extravagant lifestyle they were once accustomed to!
