Yes, Fiji: Paradise here I come!
Or at least that was what I thought. Upon arrival in Fiji it becomes clear that it really is paradise when you consider the climate and the scenery. Lots of beautiful islands (most of which very small) are a big tourist attraction, and with reason. Nevertheless paradise nowadays often implies: nice hot showers, internet and if possible cable tv.
You will find none of this on the islands in Fiji (except on the main island)! So after an initial culture shock I decided I could go without all of these luxuries for at least one week (= length of my stay in Fiji).
I had booked a "package" which involves a stay on multiple islands and the transport from and to the different places. After spending the arrival day in Nadi (main island) I went first to:
Sunrise Lagoon Resort
Some of you might think that resorts are always very luxurious: they aren't. Sunrise Lagoon Resort was pretty nice, but had no continuous electricity or hot water. The place itself was pretty decent and situated next to the beach. The local host a tranny who called him/her-self Queen and sidekick Britney Spears (which was a dude) welcomed me on this island. The whole situation seemed a bit strange in the beginning, later on I found out that they were actually quite funny.
I spent the first night with 7 others in the dorm, the second night with only one other person.
The good thing about Sunrise Lagoon was that the beach where "the Blue Lagoon" was filmed was located on the other side of the island and could be reached by a short walk (20 min). I spend my second day on this beach, which was absolutely stunning. The morning of the third day I went on an excursion to underwater-caves and continued my trip (after a nice farewel song) to my second destination in the Yasawa Islands:
Wanna Taki Cruise
This floating dorm was a very cool part of my trip in Fiji. As I am not really a beach-person, meaning that I get bored if on a beach and doing nothing, I was happy to get of the island and go on a boat. The boat was basically a floating dorm, but lots of activities were available such as: kayaking, snorkling, crab-race etc. I went snorkling, which was absolutely stunning and therefore took a scuba-diving class on the second day. The underwaterworld and the enormous variety of fish was really really cool! The second night we had a traditional dinner and fresh coconuts!
After two days of fun on the boat I went to my last destination in Fiji:
South Sea Island
This tiny island (I walked around the island in 4 minutes) was my last stop on the islands. I actually only spend an evening on the island as the next day I went on a day-sailing trip with village visit, BBQ and Kava ceremony (Kava is the traditional drink of Fiji locals). We also stopped on the island where the movie "Castaway" was shot with Tom Hanks.
