Yesterday we travelled by trains from Florence to Sorrento. The eurostar which we caught to Naples was excellent. This trip took 3 hrs but was a great way to travel in comfort. The countryside between Florence & Rome is stunning, hilltop villages everywhere.
Between Rome & Naples more elevated land, hills & mountains which we thought was picturesque.
The train from Naples to Sorrento was very slow, many stops & our first day of rain since setting foot in Europe. Yes we hear your sighs of sympathy!
It was ok as the day was filled with traveling!
Arrived in Sorrento & got the rip off taxi driver ( no other choice ). Hotel in a good position with great view of Naples bay.
It was Paul's 55th birthday so a lovely meal at the hotel restaurant. Liz organized a cake for desert as a surprise for Paul.
What a surprise that turned out to be. The picture of Paul consuming it says it all.
No idea what was in the cake but it was foul! Some sort of alcohol combined with something extremely bitter. Beautifully decorated. Gave us a good laugh as the boys consumed theirs & we tried to work out what to do with ours.
I would normally be polite & eat it even if I didn't like it but not an option this time!
When asked by our delightful waiter if we would like to take the other half of the cake to our rooms for later we suggested the staff may like it for supper. He seemed very happy about this ( and so were we ).
We had a lovely meal otherwise & sat in the lounge area enjoying the grand piano played by a talented local.
Off to Positano tomorrow.
