Hi everyone,
We left Cambodia four days ago and crossed the border into Laos, since then internet, well electricity in general, has been a little more difficult to come across! The last few days in Cambodia were lovely and a vast improvement on the overpriced Phnom Penh. We stopped at a small town called Kratie (somehow pronounced Kratche!) where you can watch the sunset over the Mekong River. We also hired bikes for a day and cycled 10 miiles up to Kampi which is famous for dolphin watching (we didn't do this because they were charging 7dollars to sit on a bench) and it's rapids. They've built a series of connected pontoons on the rapids (that weren't THAT rapid) and charge a small amount to let people sit on them for the day. There were families picnicing, groups of local kids and the whole place had a really nice atmosphere. We dangled our feet in the water and read our books in the afternoon sunshine.
Boarder crossing into Laos was fine, none of the corruption and bribes we'd been told about. We've spent the last 4 days on Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands) mainly relaxing and swinging in the hammock (well Steph has a monopoly on that!). Our one trip was a boat trip to see the Meking Dolphins that we missed out on in Cambodia. It's easy to be cynical about stuff like Dolphin watching but there was something really nice about seeing them in the wild.
Don Kohn is a beautiful place and it's been nice to do nothing, no tourist attractionis to go around, no miles of walking, no bus trips every two days. We're refreshed now though and ready to jump back on the backpacker trail. We travel to Pakse tomorrow and will find more reliable internet there to upload photos as we have quite a backlog!
Love to everyone
Greg and Steph
