Greg and Kerrie's travels
Today we explored Newport, the scene of Australia's historic America's Cup win. In 1983 Australia II, with its revolutionary winged keel, beat Stars and Stripes to become the first country to take the America's Cup from the home country.
Newport is a stunning harbour area where the rich live and go to party. The town itself has many streets that contain magnificent mansions. One of the mansions (we couldn't find out which one) was rented by Alan Bond and his wife Eileen during the America's Cup bid.
We drove down Bellevue Avenue and admired the mansions and then followed the coastline around Ocean Drive. We stopped at Fort Adams, not far from where Jackie Kennedy spent her summers. When we arrived back in town we spent some time wandering around the Boat Show that was happening in the harbour.
After a quick breakfast, we hit the road again and set the GPS for a motorcycle accessory shop called Twisted Throttle in Exeter, Rhode Island. Greg has been checking out the merchandise on Twisted Throttle's web site for quite a while so we thought we should visit in person while we had the chance. We wandered about the shop for a while but were a little disappointed with the amount of merchandise on display - not as much as we expected and certainly no bargains.
Back into the car and we set off for Cape Cod. This is not a destination on most Australian traveller's lists but we have a very special reason for going there. In 1976 we were teaching in Warren, NSW when a young American couple called Bob and Sally Konowicz arrived in town to teach with us. We got to know them very well and have remained firm friends ever since. We have visited them when they worked in Germany in 1982 and have visited them twice before on Cape Cod and once in Cheyenne, Wyoming at their son's home. We were very excited to have the opportunity to visit them again as we have not seen them since 2009.
We arrived in Brewster to be greeted enthusiastically by Sally and Bob and were shown to our luxurious guest accommodation. Last time we were here, our bedroom was a loft above the garage, now it is comfortable guest accommodation after some renovations by Bob and Sally. We will spend the next 5 days travelling with our friends exploring Maine, New Hampshire and hopefully across the border into Canada for a quick visit.
