Greentrees On Tour
A long drive through winding roads barely clinging to the steep cliffs with magnificant views of remote fishing villages, led us to our next destination of Cinque Terra. Cinque Terra, meaning 5 Towns.
On a coastline on the east of Italy are 5 small and remote seaside fishing towns which were once quiet rural villages, joined only by a narrow and dangerous walking track on the edge of the cliffs, is now a melting pot of tourist activity, where tourists from all over the world come to experience the magic of Cinque Terra.
This place has it all, from mixing it up with other travellers until 2am in one of the seaside bars, hiring a boat, exploring the history, hiking on the dangerous walking tracks, relaxing at one of the beaches, swimming in a little secret spot in the dark blue waters, or just siting back on your balcony drinking a local wine and reading an engrossing book. All of these we did and loved every second of it.
Over the 3 days we were here, we also experienced sensationsal local food and wines and imagined how great it would be to stay here. We instantly fell in love with this place, actually I would think it to be very hard not to.
One of the major attractions of this place is the walking trail between the 5 towns. The 4 walks vary in length and difficulty, but all share the same amazing views of the cliff hugging villages and the mediterranean sea. It was quite hot when we did these walks, and found parts of the walk quite hard, but it was worth it in the end and we rewarded ourselves with a swim.
Although we had an amazing time, it almost became a nightmare as Leanne experienced 3 scary situations, all within 24 hours of each other.
The 1st incident involved fainting whilst we were sitting in a restuarant, and unfortunately the communication breakdown between myself and the waiter could not have come at a worse time. Luckily Leanne revived and was OK, and she still managed to enjoy the meal that followed.
The 2nd incident was the scariest. It occured the next day as we were walking along some rocks towards a little unknown swimming spot that the locals only know about. I led the way as Leanne followed from behind. Whilst I was not looking, Leanne slipped and was quickly sliding on her bottom towards the side of the rock, which dropped 2 meters onto some more jaggard rocks below. Luckily I turned and saw her sliding, with just enough time to leap and grab her by one of her arms (whilst trying not to slip and fall over the edge with her) and pull her back to safety. We were both left shaking for quite some time as we pondered on what may have been, until we decided to try again and this time we safely managed to get into the crystal clear water.
The 3rd incident occured while we were having dinner that same day, and whilst I was asking for the bill, an insect flew into Leannes eye amd got stuck. Leanne was in a lot of pain, but luckily there was a New Zealand couple next to us who was also a doctor, and with his help we managed to get the insect and the pain out.
Despite all of these events, we still had an amazing time, with the highlight being when I discovered a little goat track on the side of a cliff that led us away from the main track and towards a vantage point overlooking the coastline from high up with nothing but a few feet of track seperating us from a 500 meter drop into the sea. This is where we were able to take some amazing sunset photos, and we also took this opportunity to pray and truly thank God for such a beautiful location and an awesome holiday that we have had so far.
