Dahab is renowned for being Egypt's back-packer haven - much less commercialised, more laid back and far cheaper than Sharm El-Sheikh………but we wouldn't know too much about that as we checked ourselves into a 5* Hilton resort!!
We decided that we simply had to splurge it for our last six days and boy are we glad that we did! We took a deluxe room with a huge bed, sofa, bath, all the usual luxuries and a big outdoor terrace with a hammock. We had forgotten that places like this existed! Obviously we gradually stole all the freebies on offer too!
The good thing about 5* in Dahab is that it is still cheap - a three course meal in the a-al carte restaurant cost about a tenner. Needless to say that we did not venture very far! The resort was in a really picturesque little bay surrounded by mountains and we really made the most of just lounging around on the beach and doing nothing.
The first observation arriving here after a short and painless bus ride from Sharm was the weather. Whilst we hoped that both the black skies and winds were temporary we soon started spotting things around the bay that suggested otherwise. All the bars had names like "windjammer" and scuba diving adverts said things like "beat the wind - get under the water!" The vast number of windsurfing shops did not look like they had sprung up that morning to capitalise on freak weather conditions either!
With a bit of "if you can't beat it join in" attitude on the first day Graham stupidly asked about enrolling us on some windsurfing lessons. This was stupid because anyone that had just spent the last few hours watching fully paid up surf bums shooting around at 200mph should have guessed that this was no weather for beginners! The nice lad in the shop pointed this out as politely as he could before explaining that he was not out surfing himself having come off at such a speed the day before he broke his harness and had whiplash!
Thankfully, the black skies did rapidly give way to scorching hot sunshine and the strategically placed windbreaks on the beach worked a treat. We did manage the 3km walk into the main area of Dahab once, but only once! Although nice enough it only really served to prove that we were not missing much in the resort so we turned back never to venture out again!
Although Gem was still battling a nasty cold (so bad it even saw her drinking only tea of an evening!) we had a lovely time relaxing in Dahab. It was just the right place to chill out, gain a bit of a tan and resign ourselves to the fact that all good things do indeed come to an end.
We have definitely had the time of our lives these last six months and will be bringing home even more memories than photos!
Although we wish that we could keep travelling forever we are really looking forward to seeing all of our family and friends again………..but if you all fancy simultaneously selling up and heading off for a Project Fogg II then count us well and truly in!
