Right then all, as i said in my last journal entry, we have arrived safe and sound in Singapore. It seems like a pretty cool city - but very very busy. We are staying in a district called Little India .. and it is just that!!! It has a really vibrant and buzzing atmosphere and there are always loads of people about!!! But no matter how many people there are today, there is 1 less - poor old Sarah. It seems she has caught some sort of bug and is currently in the hostel (yep back in hostels for a few days, in a 16 bed dorm!!!!!! not loving it at all!!!) in bed with a temperature and a poorly belly!!
Luckily though we managed to find a portable cd player in the 'free stuff' box, so we nicked that as we bought a few copied cd's in bali for about 50p each - best thing of all - they work!!!! So Sar is listening to some music and trying to restore her strength!
I dont think that the curry that we had last night did her any favours at all!! It was the weirdest way of getting a curry ever!!! the whole square was absolutely packed with people, there was loud music blaring and people bustling and jostling for position at the various stalls! Then some guy started asking us all of these questions, we didnt have a clue what he was saying so we just nodded politley and he started serving up loads of rice in banana leaves, followed by something else (no idea what), then the curry and naan bread - all served in what can only be described as freezer bags with little ties on the top. An unusual experience definitely but it was delicious!!!
During our first day in Singapore we decided to visit the zoo. We hopped on the very efficient and cheap (about the only thing that is cheap here!!) metro and made our way to the zoo. All in al it was a pretty good zoo. They had loads of animals and most of them are not kept in cages, but contained by moats instead (except for the one that can swim obviously!!). They had white tigers, jaguars, lions and my favourite (as i had never seen one before ) 2 polar bears!!! Thats right 2 polar bears in a zoo that is about 2 degrees north of the equator!!! Not quite sure if that is right - backed up by the fact that the polar bear was just swimming round and round and round, doing exactly the same route in his little pool - up for air at the waterfall, back under, swim by the overhanging rock, climb up the steps as if he is getting out, then dive back in and swim underwater to the waterfall!!!! The good thing about it was the easy photo opportunities as if youi missed him once - you knew where he would be and when!!!! Was a pretty good day but very very hot and humid!!!
Thats about it so far - we are going to pop into the city tmw if sar feels better to see whats going on down there - then we have to book our first mode of transport to malaysia.
Till next time
