After a few months of pretty much staying put in Sydney it was good to get on the road (or in the air!) again! Arrived into Hobart, had a few issues finding somewhere to stay (who knew that it was such a popular place?) and then went for an explore. Unfortunately, from 30 degrees plus on arrival it soon turned fairly cool and rainy... so the explore turned into a trip into the pub, which was fine (typical soulless Aussie pub) but with live music (good, apart from the women who was singing along absolutely hammered). Soon left there and stumbled across Elisabeth St Pier and bar T-42 degrees where we sampled some more of Tassie's finest. Ended up having dinner at a great veggie place called Sirens.
Woke up to more 30 degree sunshine on Saturday morning - a perfect morning to explore Salamanca Market and grab some breakfast. Tassie is very proud of its local food and the raspberries, honey and fresh bread we had for breakfast on the waterfront were great. After a quick stop in the Katmandu store to buy a tent (more on this later) we headed back to the hostel to drop off our purchases and change into cycling gear.
We had a fab afternoon descending Mount Wellington (1270m) on mountain bikes. I felt pretty gnarly at times, especially as Suvi and I were the only ones to do the offroad section (I did stack it a couple of times!) We then retired to Shippies, the official pub of the Sydney Hobart yacht race for a couple of pints of Cascade (the Hobart beer). I enjoyed looking at all the memorabilia and it was great to find a pub with a bit more character! Then it was a fish and chip dinner at Fish Frenzy - we deserved it after all the biking!
