We made it to the concrete jungle!
The journey here wasn't easy, but we made it!
We left Sydney at 2pm on Tuesday 09/09. We flew United Airways to San Francisco and then to NY. I couldn't get much sleep at all on the first flight, which was the longest of the two - hate when that happens..!
I didn't realise United is quite an average little airline. The plane from Sydney didn't have a very good entertainment system, the food served was ok but not generous at all, and there was no such thing as hot chocolate and cup noodles (or any snack for that matter), which are plentiful when you fly Qantas to South America. I asked for a snack and the options were: water, bread and butter. Oh and there were a few leftover apple crumbles from dinner. Anyway, I decided to go try to sleep (without success).
The flight from SanFran to NY had quite a bit of turbulence but nothing critical. We reached NY safely and were lucky enough to get a friendly taxi driver who agreed to include our stopover to pickup the house keys in the flat fee from the airport! On top of that, he didn't make fun of Paul when he questioned the driver's entering the car on the "wrong side" - hahaha..! So we happily gave him a good tip - here's to generosity! :-)
Another little debacle had to happen on this day that has been the longest of my life - we got to the place (Airbnb accommodation, we hired someone's studio for the 5 nights we're here), but we couldn't unlock the door. A few texts, some swearing and a phone call later, we were in! Around 11.30pm of Tuesday 09/09...!
We still had energy for a little wonder around the hood to find a place to eat, 'cause Katie was hungry! On the domestic flight - also United - there was no food service unless you bought it. Luckily we had a quick snack before the flight! UrbanSpoon sent us to this very weird place nearby, so we decided to find one ourselves. We ended up buying beer and two frozen meals from a convenience store. Only to walk past an actual restaurant on the way home..! And then, the cherry on the top: back at home we realised there's no microwave! We really needed this day to end..!!
Tomorrow we'll be touristing around the city, expect some cool pix!
