Heellooo,
So after our last entry on Sunday we decided to go to see some Thai Boxing. I have to say it is probably the most expensive thing we could choose to do whilst here....unless its just because we were ripped off. Not sure but either way it was awesome. After negotiating a price with a taxi driver (ben refused to get into another tuk tuk) he decided to change the price once we started to drive. We told him we were not paying his price so he had better pull over right now if he wanted even a single baht. Finally we got to the statium and we were treated like VIP (prob cos of the price we were paying.) We sat ringside...in the red corner with the judges box right infront of us. We think that we even made local Thai tv because we were so close and the camera often flashed our way. It was pretty cool seeing the commentators interviewing people like they do at the AFL. Unfortunately everyone in our corner kept losing but we got heaps of good shots which was nice.
Then yesterday we decided to be adveturous and go on an organised bus tour to Kanchanaburi - a couple of hours west of Bangkok towards Burma. They took us to a WWII cemetery there - had many many buried POWs from when the Japanese came. It was pretty amazing to see because there were just soo many graves with really nice messages left on them. They were all divided up into countries too - so many Aussies an Brits died here. We also saw the Bridge over the River Kwai (really must see that film) but apparently it looks nothing like the film shows it because it was bombed and had to be rebuilt. It was still pretty cool to see the train track that all those people died to make. Apparently 32 people died per 1km of train track....and its a long train track between Burma and Thailand. We later in the day had the opportunity to go on the train for an hour and half along this death railway.
We also visited the WWII museum in Kanchanaburi which was actually kinda lame. Didnt really have much to do with the war....just models of every dictator and political figure there has ever been really. It did have a good photo spot for looking at the bridge though which was ok. Then we just strolled around Kanchanaburi town and had a quick look at the local markets.
We then went for a provided lunch on a floating restaurant on the Kwai which was pretty cool. Since it was a buffet we were a bit concerned about the safety of the food but so far so good. They then took us elephant riding which was absolutely PETRIFYING and awesome. We managed to get the biggest goddamn elephant there and the stupid saddle felt like it was going to fall off any minute (even though it didnt.) Our "driver"??? then decided it would be funny to climb off the elephant and leave us up there...the only good thing about that was that when it was time for him to come up again he stood on the trunk and the elephant lifted him back which was soooo cool. Going downhill on an elephant is horrible....fiona was nearly hanging off the saddle and ben was grabbing her to keep her from falling off. But that aside....it was very very cool. The elephants were soooo cute and people fed them bananas which was good for photos.
Then came bamboo rafting down the river Kwai. This was sooo relaxing as we could just sit with feet in the water and sunbake. Then the crazy driver again thought it would be funny to jump off the raft and wave goodbye to us haha. Good humour that one.
Our 2nd last stop for the day was at the Erawan waterfall where we went for a swim. Soooo nice as Fi was desperate for swimming. Really refreshing and really pretty. We saw heaps of Thai families there having a picnic which was nice....kinda a beach setting with lots of beachwear market tents....just no beach.
We then took the trip on the Death Railway where fiona managed to insult some Dutch folk by asking them if they were Germans. But in fairness to her a busload of Germans had just arrived on the train and i mean come on....the language is kinda similar..ish. But they were ok about it and told us about their aunty that lives in Doncaster melbourne hahaha.
After that we pretty much just went home as we were really really tired. Had dinner at the MBK centre and caught the sky train home. It is sooooooooo hard to eat in this country as a vegetarian. The only thing available is pizza at crazy prices - so sad.
Ben has now decided Bangkok really isnt his cup of tea......soooo fast paced and crazy all of the time. But really i think its all because of the annoying tuk tuk drivers. All we want is to be able to go straight to the place we want to go to and not to a jewellery store first. That aside we are having a great time here. Todays trip is to the Grand Palace and Buddha and maybe a ride on the ferris wheel yaaay.
Catch ya all later!!!!
Love Ben and Fi xoxo
