It was worth getting up early this morning for the sunrise whale watch trip. Just for the sunrise alone which was stunning but a few whales did show up which was exciting. Although nothing we hadn't seen before it is always breath catching to see these giant giants in the wild. With nature, you never know what is going to show up.
After breakfast back on board we headed to Mala Pier, our turtle snorkelling site. It is an old pier that collapsed during a hurricane here in the 90's and the coral and fish have come to call it home, as has the turtles. As soon as the skiffs arrived, the turtles were poking their heads up to see what all the fuss was about (really to take a breath, but nice to think they are saying hello). People started jumping in and saying there were 4 or 5 right under the boat. Jumped in and there they were to say hello. Love seeing these beautiful animals in the wild. Mum waited till last to get in as she didn't want to hold anyone up. Once she sits on the edge, I put her fins on for her which we have done in the past but this time she struggled to make the jump into the water. Was afraid she was going to hit her back. One of the staff came up with an ingenious way to get her in....gave her a noodle to put under her arms and he basically picked up the edges of the noodle, including mum and threw her in. It worked. She was in and then once she was in, she was one of the last to get out of the water. She absolutely loved seeing the turtles. Water was so clear. We also saw a frog fish and white tipped reef shark. But the turtles were the highlight. When the current would take mum away I would go over and grab the noodle she was using for buoyancy and tow her back in. It worked. An amazing morning and highlight of the trip so far.
Back on board they opened up the back deck for a swim party again and I jumped in for a few minutes. Would have stayed longer but I had my massage booked for 11.30am. Every passenger has the chance to have a 30min complimentary massage during the trip and they schedule them around our activities.
After lunch, we were shuttled into the town of Lahaina which would definitely be the town to come to for a holiday in Maui with great whale watching and turtle snorkelling. Had a couple of hours in town to wander around, which also has the largest Banyon tree in the world. It looks like all different trees, but just one. Incredible. Some great galleries in town that we wandered through and finished off with an ice-cream compliments of Uncruise who had given us a $5 voucher for a shop.
They had pushed everything forward by 30mins today as the Captain was worried about some winds that were picking up through the Pailolo Channel that we were crossing to get to Molokai. The original plan was to make the crossing this evening but he wanted to get across this afternoon so as soon as were on board, they picked up anchor and shot across the channel. Wasn't too rough, compared to the Alenuihaha Channel on NYE. Managed to down a few Sangria's while we did the crossing. Dai Mar also gave a chat on some of the other itineraries Uncruise do...choices, choices. Mum had her massage before dinner. We had requested our massages be later in the trip because when we were in Alaska we were on the first day, not when you really need it.
After dinner, we had a chat about sharks. Dai Mar is a Marine Biologist and sharks are his passion and he wanted to give us some facts about why we shouldn't be scared of sharks. When you break the statistics down, you can see his point.
