Back on 20th Sept, my friend Jennifer offered to contact her friend Hazel who lives in the small village of Cailhau. This is exactly 100km away from Jennifer's house in Catllar, so was well placed as the start of my final day to complete the loop. I had phoned Hazel on 23rd and arranged to stay over tonight. I had a choice of routes to get there. Possibly the most obvious was along the Canal du Midi, but I reckoned that would be a bit slow going. Jennifer had suggested taking a detour via Mirepoix, which is apparently very picturesque. In the end I decided to take a fairly straight route via Baziege, then crossing the canal to Ayguesvives and from there initially along a ridge, eventually to Castelnaudary, where I stopped for lunch and to buy a gift. Then I phoned Hazel to confirm my ETA. When I got to the village, I couldn't find the address immediately, so asked a local. She was also unsure, but when I mentioned Hazel's name she said 'Oh yes the English lady' and pointed the way. Hazel was the perfect hostess, and we had a lovely meal and an enjoyable evening chatting about Scottish Country Dancing, my upcoming visit to Rwanda and much else.
