Aruba! First port of call. I had booked a tour with Sonny Binns that I saw on Cruise Critic and TripAdvisor because he got really good reviews. There were quite a few others from our roll call doing the same tour so we had organised to meet in the Atrium at 8.30 and somehow Ann managed to get us a VIP escort off the ship so we didn't have to wait in line with everyone else but were escorted down crew stairs straight to the gangplank.... Fat lot of good it did us though because Sonny was half an hour late, we were all a little annoyed however once he got there he was so lovely, happy and charming it was impossible to stay annoyed for long. The tour cost $30, so well worth booking. Heather and Tim hadn't booked anything but luckily there were 2 spare seats so they squeezed on the tour with us. Sonny drove and chatted taking us to the natural bridge, lighthouse and explaining about the history of Aruba and the homes etc. First stop was at these amazing rock formations surrounded by gorgeous gardens filled with more rocks and lots of cactus, here we climbed up some fairly steep stairs to get to the top of the rocks for a great view over the island, next we went to the "wild" side of the island, this is so barren but has a strange allure, it's almost like you're on another planet. Over this side there are gold mine smelting works ruins which were built in 1872 ... All very interesting but I'm not going to write it all down, go, do the tour! He also stopped at a local supermarket so we could go buy a beer, or two, no-one had a bottle opener so Tim came to the rescue and opened everyones beer with his a lighter!! What tha ....Good party trick that one, not quite sure how he worked out he could open beer with a lighter but I guess necessity is the mother of invention!! from there we went on to the Alto Vista chapel which is also on the North Coast and dates back to 1750. For those of us that wanted to go snorkeling he dropped us at Boca Catalina with instructions on where the bus stop is to get back to the port. The four of us and Laura (from Texas) hopped off and spent a lovely hour or so snorkeling then a quick 5-10 minute walk and just as we got there the bus arrived... It was $2.30 each which was an easy process and we had a very happy friendly driver, they don't say "one happy island" for nothing. The bus pulled up right opposite the cruise terminal so we had a quick look through the markets and I got my shot glass and magnet then back inside the port area we bought some shirts for Rodd and I got a dress with Aruba, one happy island on it. By this time it was nearly four and we hadn't eaten lunch so straight back onboard, quick shower and off to the buffet for some food! We went to the Scotty Cavanaugh show at 7.30, this was a great show, he's a juggler but also has a very good "comedy" routine to go along with it. I know we went to watch "Majority Rules" game show in Dazzles after that, cos I've got photos to prove it.. but after that I'm not sure... I think we may have gone to get some food from the Sports bar and then off to bed. Curacao tomorrow!!
