I've had a busy few days again. I feel like I'm getting lots of exercise. From San Ignacio I took a day trip to Caracol, a Mayan ruin in Belize. It was a cool place to visit, buried in the jungle and you were allowed to climb the temples, the steps were huge, very hard work! On the way home we stopped at a swimming area on the river with little waterfalls and pools to play in.
Next morning we left Belize and crossed the border to Guatemala. Once in Guatemala we stopped at Tikal ruins. This was similar to Caracol but I think more restoration was done longer ago as the buildings looked older. You could climb some temples but most had wooden staircases up the side instead of letting you climb the actual structure. We sat at the top of temple four and watched the sunset before finishing our drive to Flores.
We only spent one night in Flores and continued on to Rio Dulce in the morning. On the way to our accommodation we stopped at a hot water waterfall. The water that came over the falls was hot then it mixed with a cold river. It was really pretty.
Here we are staying in a very cool jungle lodge on the river. My little cabin is on stilts over the water. This morning I got up really early to do a sunrise kayak to see and hear howler monkeys in the jungle. The monkeys were awesome but kayaking is hard! Then I had a break for breakfast and carried on with a hike in the jungle with a guide explaining the plants and how they live together. Part of the tour was on a swing bridge right up in the jungle canopy so we got to see from all levels. Now I'm spending the afternoon relaxing before we move on to Antigua tomorrow.
