Monday, Public Holiday, saw us hitting the road again, trying to cover as many k’s as possible to get to Mt Surprise, so as to head to the Undara Lava Tubes the next day. We passed through Croydon and Georgetown; both small, quiet, remote, historic towns. After a brief stop at Normanton to have a look at the huge sculpture of Krys the croc, we drove into gorgeous Karumba, which is split into two parts, the main town upriver slightly, and “The Point”, which is at the river mouth. After the horrendous road it was such a relief to hit some tar coming in to Burketown. We had lunch in town at the very well-kept park before heading out of town a short way to find a riverside camp. We picked the furthest one, at the end of the line of camps. It was private, quiet and shady and had a fantastic spot to set up for fishing. Lovely, except for, of course, the sandflies.
