Arrived at Livingstone (the Zambian side of Vic Falls) last Friday. First impressions - marginally hotter than home at 35 degrees. This has been the first time since we left that we've actually felt like we are in Africa (SA was a bit posh with far too much electricity, hot water and good roads). We absolutely loved it! First day we walked around the falls, resisting the temptation to spend 3 dollars on a waterproof as waterproofs are for girls. But then we got absolutely soaked as it is rainy season and the spray is like being in a permanent shower. We took a sunset cruise up the Zambezi, which was great until the electric storm broke out right over our heads and it felt like we were dodging lightening bolts. M (the insane) really enjoyed it! We went to the Royal Livingstone hotel for afternoon tea, which defeated both of us. We had a couple of waiters each, and a special guard to keep the monkeys away from the food (although he failed a couple of times much to our amusement and they got the jammy dodgers!). White water rafting was the next challenge, although being high water the rapids were a bit tamer than the advertised grade 5. There were, however, some pretty impressive and very dangerous whirlpools which sucked a couple of people into them - F was a little apprehensive about this. The hike out of the gorge was a killer, but the cold beer at the top was a great incentive. On our final day we both went microlighting over the falls which gave us the most spectacular views. Luckily the flights were only 15 minutes as it was quite bumpy up there and we were a bit green afterwards. Cure for greenness - alcohol. Off we went with some mates to the Livingstone again where we had cocktails watching the sunset over the Zambezi (abusing our Visa cards), followed by a good old cuzza and hitchhiking home. Fab night. Very sad to leave, already planning the next trip, now back in Joburg preparing to head off on safari. Details in next postcard, stay tunes batfans, lol mike and flavia xxxxx
