After the Planetshakers service, we went to a few local Pubs in order to get wifi and electricity, among them an Irish pub with Great live music. Following that, we drove to a city called Torquay, the surf capital of Australia, which also marks the beginning of the Great Ocean Road. We slept there on a parking space, right next to the main road. This town is crowded with surf shops and every year the oldest running surf contest takes place at bells beach. We went to the surf museum and got learnt about the history of surfing. We then went to buy two very similar caps, seen in the picture, enhancing our photographs and videos.
In the afternoon we started to drive along the Great Ocean road and had a look at the memorial arch which made visitors remember the WWII soldiers who built the road in honour of their companions having died during the war. The Great Ocean road is thus considered as the Greatest War memorial existing.
In the evening of that Monday, we went to Teddy's lookout which offered us a stunning view of the road and a marvellous sunset. We slept right next to the lookout and enjoyed another pasta meal.
On Tuesday, we had breakfast right next to the beach and got to know a lovely elderly couple. The woman was very noble in character and the way they treated eachother was very honouring. After a certain time I asked them whether they were christians and not very surprisingly the answer was positive.
After a drive through our first real Australian rain we made a stop at Cape Otway and did a hike through the rainforest, which was entirely different to the one in the North but still rich in plants. On that hike we got to know two Germamn girls that we talked to. It wouldnt be the last time that we met them. We then drove on to a place where you could allegedly see Koalas in the wild. I didnt expect much but was overwhelmed when we arrived there. You could see about 50 Koalas, some being very active. After a time the Germans arrived as well and we had another chat. We drove to a lighthouse but didnt enter it (20 bucks) and saw the Germans again. We said goodbye and thought that this was it.
We drove to the world-famous twelve Apostles, basically being stone formations in the water but having a very beautiful shape. In order to buy some gas we drove to the next city to put some fuel in the car and then decided to return to the Apostles to see the sunset. We stayed for quite a long time to see the penguins, coming out of the water. The others had already left when I saw some very little white dots - penguins. Overnight we stayed on a campground for electricity and internet reasons.
On the 19th of September we had our usual porridge in the morning and talked to a nice and very funny Italian couple that we had got to know the preceeding day. We drove to some other very beautiful stone formations, an arch and the London Bridge. We then headed to the Grampians where we had two lookouts, one being very similar to Switzerland, the other one offering a good view on the balconies which are cool rock formations being the perfect place to climb and see what a rock can hold. When we were about to leave, we heard some well-known voices and it was the German girls again. After having taken several pictures and taken seperate ways again we went to a city called Ballarat and slept there.
Thursday morning we went to a huge outdoor museum showing a gold mining city about 150 years ago. The small town was very real and one could feel the spirit of that time. The town was seperated into three parts, each symbolising one era of the city. We went into a real goldmine and did a tour. It was also possible to dig for gold and I could actually find some, although it was put in there by the Museum. Nevertheless the process of finding it was real and therefore a great experience. In the evening we almost drove to Canberra.
On Friday we visited the Capital. We had a look at the Parliament House and did a guided tour there. The building was huge and cannot be compared to either the German or the Swiss Parliament. On the roof of the building I did my daily push-ups and Christian took some cool pictures. In the afternoon we went to another lookout and were stunned by the view. We had a prayer session there and asked God, that we may have an impact on our journey. In the evening, we enjoyed some delicious meat in a park that was recommended to us immediately after the prayer and talked to a guy sitting there. We had an amazing talk about the church and he thought about going to church again. He said, he was inspired and we encouraged him to go home and take care of himself and his family. Wow, this is how God works. That night we headed to the Blue mountains where we arrived the following day.
The Blue Mountains, a world heritage area were really beautiful. Especially a waterfall that we hiked to was breath-taking. The water being lighted by the sun and showing beautiful patterns. Furthermore the Three Sisters and the Giant Stairways were worth seeing. The area there resembled the Grand Canyon only that trees were growing there. In the evening we drove to Sydney.
On Saturday, we got to the home of a friend of our pastor. They invited us to their church, the Hillsong church. The hospitality of the people was amazing and the Service was good as well. In the afternoon we brought our Campervan back to the rental station and then went to the Hillsong Hills campus, a hall being able to host about 3500 people. The sermon was really good and I was inspired by their way of thinking. We then returned to the flat and had some great talks about life and the Hillsong college.
