You should avoid all travel to the northern province of Sucumbios, which borders Colombia. Colombian guerrilla groups are known to have influence in all regions bordering Colombia. Foreigners, including oil workers, are targets for kidnappers in these areas and the rate of crime is also high. In July 2002, a British oil worker and his driver were kidnapped and subsequently killed. On 25 November 2007 street demonstrations, directed at the Ecuadorian government, began across the Orellana province, an Amazon region to the east of Quito. The government has sent in the military to control the situation and there were injuries and arrests as a result of clashes. Since 14 December 2007, the situation has stabilised and the villages of Coca and Dayuma are calm again. Although the demonstrations in Orellana province have ended, you should make enquiries about the local situation before making a decision to travel to the area.

Hello daughter, good to read in teh latest blog that you are getting used to limited hot water in teh shower - my gas bill should plummet when you get home as it wont be needing to give20 minute showers twice a day!!
