This book came from my mother's loft and I think it won't have been looked at for years. Flicking through it, I noticed most hymns had a word or occasionally a couple of words written by the title of the hymn neatly in pencil, probably, I'd guess, by Reuben himself. These word(s) were often continental place names. I think this page was the last one which Reuben ever looked at, as the page was marked with an old brown wooden taper (the sort you light candles with). As an example of these obscure written words, this page has "Breslaw" and "Chapel Royal" written by the hymn titles. All very curious, and I don't suppose we'll ever know the answer to this mystery and I'm not sure it's of the slightest importance, anyway. In any event, Reuben took the answer to his grave, dying three years later of consumption, in 1896.
