Early 60's
The mysterious Uncle Bert, did come to visit us from Canada in about 1961. The fact that he had a North American accent gave him a certain exotic air, although he was also the very essence of calm respectability. This photo in every way personifies the period and the symbolic nature of a ex patriot Brit returning to his roots; the hired, Vauxhall Victor (which I'm sure would have been at the premium end of the price list), the brownish feel to the picture and Bert's comfortable, benign, "bank manager" persona. I think he would have qualified as a third member of the art duo"Gilbert & George". I'm afraid, Bert then left and was never, as far as I know, heard of again.
