This sculpture remembers the Spanish born monk San Pedro Claver (1580-1654) who became known as the 'Apostle of the Blacks' or the 'Slave of the Slaves' for his work ministering to slaves from Africa. He was the first person to be canonized (become a saint) in the New World in the year 1888. I think I almost look like a cardboard cutout next to these larger than life characters.
