After paying our respects to Joey Dunlop we headed out of Tallinn. Our ride today was about 330km and we would leave Estonia and arrive in Latvia - there really is no other way to go when heading south!
Our route today took us through the countryside on a single lane each-way highway. The road surface was smooth but the number of trucks using this road made progress slow at times. The good news however was the added half lane at the side of the road that considerate drivers used to allow faster vehicles room to pass - a great idea we thought!
Our destination tonight was Riga, beside the Gulf of Riga which flows in to the Baltic Sea. Our motel is on the west side of the city in the suburbs and our route took us right through the middle of the city. To say that Greg was not impressed with the city roads would be a massive understatement! The roads were heavily potholed, very uneven cobblestones with deeply rutted tram tracks crossing it in every direction. The city buildings look tired and unloved and in desparate need of some TLC. The photos of Riga were taken as we rode through city.
The motel we are staying in is delightful - a large bed, huge spa bath and our own sauna right in the bathroom (unused by us). The surrounding gardens are beautiful and each room is themed after a world city - Paris, Moscow, Miami, Manhattan - ours is Dubai. There is a large mural of the Dubai cityscape above our bed.
We did not go exploring the city of Riga - frankly, our ride through did not entice us to see more. Dinner was at a local restaurant where we had a delicious meal of tomato soup, trout and baked potato and Greg had the most delicious tasting berry pie with ice cream.
We will not be going sightseeing in the morning either as we need to keep heading south as the MotoGP in Germany is only a week away now.
