We went to see the famous Santa Catalina Monastary, which had been closed to the public until 1970. Here 'contemplative' nuns lived. The women were the 2nd daughters of Noble families sent here with enormous dowries to pray for the souls of their families. The church was raking it in I tell you. The nuns never left the monastary and were not allowed to see thier families again. The funerals were even a private affair. The only way they could talk to their families was in this corridor, through wooden grates....Nice. Rumour has it the rich nuns really lived it up in the Monastoary...they all had about 5 servants to look after them and their rooms were filled with gold tea sets, rich tapestries and expensive bed linen. But they weren't allowed mirrors in there as that was considered vain.....
