Arrived in Cambodia yesterday after a great couple of days in Saigon. Had a fab birthday - saw some great sights, the war remnants museum, and the presidential palace. Me and Sean treated ourselves to a nice dinner out, and some cocktails at a jazz bar, and sean had a HUGE chocolate cake made for me - nice treat!
We spent two days on slowboats in the Mekong delta, some beautiful little canals, along the 9 main tributaries that flow into the mouth and the sea. The people were really friendly - Em went fishing and caught 2 catsifh, one of which we ate for lunch (!) and we tried some local tropical fruits, winter melon, lotus seeds, and honey tea (and enjoyed some more....interesting(?)...Asian singing!!).
We arrived in Phnom Penh last night, capitol of Cambodia. It is a lot more developed than we thought, although there are still no street lights or pavements. So far we have visitied the killing fields, which was intense. They have built a huge temple to house the remains of the mass graves from Pol Pots regimes, and the shelves are literally stacked high with skulls. We also went to the genocide museum, an old high school which became S-21 - a 'security' prison, where Pol Pot's officials tortured and starved prisoners before sending them off for execution. It was very graphic, and some of the photographs literally chilling - it got rid of my appetite pretty quickly, but was important and interesting to see. It is still very obvious what this country has been through up to as close as 2/3 years ago, and the inhumanity that ruled here before. Still, the locals seem to have restarted their lives and its a lively Asian city with a real buzz and amazing Cambodian positive attitude. We´ve had some great local food as ever (river weed cooked in ginger and lemon grass - tastes nicer than it sounds I promise!)
We fly out to Oz on 30th, so still have a while left in Cambodia. Thank you all for the birthday messages and hope everyone is well! Keep in touch xxx
