The train ride to Sofia in Bulgaria was pretty uneventful, we went to sleep about an hour after we left Istanbul and woke around 9, jammed for 3 hours and then arrived.
It was when we arrived that the fun really began….
We walked out of the station and realized that we stupidly only written the name down of the hostel we had researched the day before, an address would have been very handy. We remembered that we had to go 5 stops on tram line number 7 so we thought we would jump on and try to find it. As soon as we had got on the tram, two old ladies produced florescent jackets which proclaimed them as ticket inspectors. Not having tickets, we tried to buy some off the ladies, but they were having none of it. The tram stopped and we were escorted off the tram and given a penalty fare ticket for 10 times the normal ticket price. Annoyed, we continued our journey for 4 more stops. After exiting the tram we realized we had gone the wrong way on the tram and had ended up in the middle of some Bulgarian suburban ghetto. Further annoyed, we rode the tram back 5 stop and spied a hostel a few hundred meters from the station. After being ripped off for 9 pounds each we settled down in our twin room.
