If Fraser Island had been a test of the mettle, the Whitsundays were the complete opposite. It was SO much fun and so laid back. Our racing sailboat, The British Defender, which had won the Whitbread race a few years prior, was to be home for 32 people including 4 crew for a lesiurely 3 day sail around the goregous Whitsunday islands. We were a real mixed bag of nationalities, brazilians, brits, yanks, canadians, danes, germans, italians, spanish and irish, plus 3 aussies.Despite the inevitable language barriers (or maybe because of it) everyone got on really well, and days and nights spent on the boat were just one big party. The islands were gorgeous and picture perfect, the weather was hot and our cook was spectacular.Despite sharing a bunk Reuben and I didnt see each other apart from the occasional hello for 3 days.I think i saw him eating dinner on the bow one night and he found me table dancing with the party-fanatic brazilians. There were too many people to chat to and too many different cultures to be compared that we didnt have time to speak to each other - it was an impressive feat to achieve on a not-very-large sailing boat!
