President & Mrs. Lincoln at Ford's Theater for "Our American Cousin"
They were accompanied by a young army officer, Henry Rathbone and his fiance, Clara Harris. Rathbone was stabbed by John Wilkes Booth after Booth had shot Lincoln. Booth then jumped from the balcony box on the stage, breaking his leg. However, he still managed to escape to southeastern Maryland and rows across the Potomac to Virginia before he is surrounded by Union soldiers. He and one of his accomplices, David Herold were hiding in a barn, which the soldiers set on fire. Herold surrendered but Booth was shot in the neck as he tried to shot at the soldiers. He was carried out of the burning barn alive, but died 3 hours later.
