Today we are heading to Playa del Carmen via the Mayan site at Chichen Itza. About a three and half hour drive away. At the Mayan site we decide to hire a guide which turns out to be a good decision. The site is quite large with a lot to take in. Her English and knowledge are both excellent. This site dates back to about 600-700AD. There were hundreds of Mayan tribes/communities in Mexico but they lived quite separately with little to no mixing between them. We toured the main parts of the site and were just about to head off on our own when a typical Mexican rain storm hit. Took shelter in a cafe for about 45 minutes. The rain eased so we made a beeline for the exit. We had lunch in town in a little cafe and then continued on to Playa del Carmen, another hour and bit away. I have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of Mexican roads. This one was a dual 2 lane freeway and the road surface was very good. Certainly makes travelling long distances more comfortable. Our arrival in Playa was a case of good timing. Just after we checked in another bout of pouring rain hit. Fortunately it stopped in time to head out to a dinner at an upmarket restaurant. Not only was it a meal but we were entertained by the waiters as well. A few of the meals were cooked at our table and they started delivering drinks balanced on their heads. 2 margaritas and 4 cans of beer was a bloody good effort. We decided to have a couple of more drinks and found a lively little bar. Not long after another rain storm came through and before long the street was under water. I had a taxi booked for 2.30am the following morning and was planning on a relatively early night. No such luck with this rain. The beers were fine, it was the tequilla shots i could have done without. Finally got back to the hotel at 12.45am. At best I was going to get about 1 hours sleep! Not sure if my alarm didn't go off or I slept through it but next thing I know it is 2.40am. Dived out of bed got dressed and was heading out of my room when I meet Pilar who was on her way to wake me up. It was an easy trip to the airport and as it turned out no need to panic. About 40 people were queued up at the check in but no airline staff had started work. So feeling very tired got checked in and then went to find a much needed coffee.
