An uneventful flight to MC, but it was good to see Mexico from the air. Quite rugged in many places with what appeared to be some fairly fast flowing rivers. Arrived at my Airbnb mid afternoon. Comfortable apartment on the 5th floor, virtually across from Alameda Park and an easy walk to the zocalo. Last year the zocalo was covered by a World Expo so I was really looking forward to seeing what it looked like. No such luck. This year it is a construction site as they undertake some major renovations. Is that a good enough reason for me to come back a third time?? Spent the afternoon wandering down some streets where I had never been before. Some really good street art and as it was Saturday the street sellers and hawkers were out in full force.
Sunday was booked up to be a very social day. First up I met Pilar, who was our group leader on my Mexican tour last year. It was great to see her again and to be with someone who is not only a local, but leads tours around Mexico City. First up the Palacio Bellas de Artes, which I think is the most stunning building in MC, both inside and outside. They have numerous murals in there painted by people such as Diego Rivera and other famous Mexican painters. These guys were into size, colour and detail. Some of them measure over 12 metres by 4 metres. The building design has art deco influence as well as Mexican indigenous styling. Quite spectacular. The rest of the day was one of "Best in MC" as declared by Pilar. The best churros, the best street for bars, the best tacos and finally the best Taco Pastors. And I would have to say she was right. It was a bit sad to say goodbye but I had had a great day and who knows, I might be back again one day for another catch up
After a bit of a rest it was on to Round 2 of the social engagements. Tony Tahara who I worked with at Suzuki has just been appointed MD of Suzuki Mexico. So it was another few hours of drinking and eating and chatting. Was good to catch up with him but by the time I got home I was feeling like I might need a stomach pump. I slept well that night.
Monday was an early start but with good reason. I was doing a tour of Teotihuacan, the biggest Mesoamerican city found to date. I had regretted not seeing this last year so was really looking forward to it. The site is quite large and is dominated by the Pyramid of the Sun and the slightly smaller Pyramid of the Moon. It dates back to 150 AD but the majority of it was built between 250-600 AD. The Pyramid of the Sun is the 3rd largest in the world and stands 70 metres high. Its a very steep climb to the top but the views are worth every step. The Pyramid of the Moon stands at the end of the 2km long Avenue of the Dead and from the platform half way up you have a breathtaking view of the entire site. The whole site, as with many others like it, is an architectural and engineering masterpiece.
And so Tuesday arrives and it's time to catch my flight to La Paz. I am now entering uncharted territory, having never been to Bolivia before. Whilst they speak essentially the same language, it is an extremely poor country, the food is different as is their culture. I'll have a few days by myself before I join my Intrepid Travel group for what I am sure will be 20 days of fun and adventure. At least, that's the plan.
