Marseille - Fort Saint Nicholas
Fort Saint Nicholas was built around 1660 and is on the opposite side of the port entrance to Fort Saint Jean and they made a formidable barrier to any ships trying to enter the old port of Marseille in their day as well as keeping a wary eye on the rebellious locals. The fort has been restored by the government and is used by the army today but was for many years used as a prison even during World War 2 when it was used by the Germans. The area is very picturesque with the marinas located around it and walking paths along the waterfront areas.
