Finally touched down Christchurch at 3am and when we got out of the plane, we can see snow block everywhere. So seeing that we have absolutely no accommodation for today, we went for the airport chairs, luckily there was plenty of spaces. As we got everything ready, blanket and our backpack as pillow etc, we fell asleep. Everything was so freezing, the airport didn't even have heater. A sympathetic airport worker set up a heating fan and put it front all of us before we can contacting Britz company (motorhome rental) to explain to them situation and arranged for the earlier pick up of the camper-van which supposed pick up at 1pm.
We made to Britz Camper hire office to pick up campervan before that we told through the process which we learnt how to use the campervan which is a 6 berth with toilet and shower. We had to learn how to put on snow chains, put gas on, empty waste water and sewage as well to set the power on. We need 240 volts power to use microwave and electric sockets which can only be done by connecting to a power outlet in a campsite but other equipment such as fridge run on 12 volts battery in the campervan.
We headed for Christchurch, soon as we entered the town centre, it were eerie with some of the buildings still ripped apart by the earthquake, there were loads of the businesses still closed and some buildings were marked with a pink pen with the date for demolishment because they can't be salvaged. We was so sad and felt sick when we saw everything in ruins, the road was dead and full of cracks. The centre of town where it suppose to have hundreds of people walking around, carrying shopping bags... But there was nobody around, the shops are all closed, the bricks are all cracked, everywhere there was pink graffiti stating the date of demolishment. Basically it was a ghost town. We head back to our camper-van to go to shopping for foods and our warm clothes as it basically -5 out there especially in the night time. Then it time for us to head for Dunedin. As we drove, we passed Ashburton, Geraldine, Temuka and Timaru, then we stopped at lay bay in Waimate for overnight. We was exhausted and went for our bed. My was on the top of driver cab, it was not too bad.
