Phuket Town. I somewhat liken this town to Dumaguete in the Philippine's Hot, colourful not as big but it seems to give off a similar vibe. We are staying at the Thalang guest house which is described in our lonely planet book as " a decrepit old shop house which oozes charm", oh and its cheap. Our room is gargantuan and reasonably cool. We dump our bags off and hide away from the midday 35degrees heat pumping out of the sky and are deciding on maybe commuting to the beaches each day to save us from the tourist prices on the west coast beaches. Jade and I now refresh and our energy regained we head into the heart of Phuket Town. Instantly we notice how everything is so much cheaper here, from chicken lollipops to cosmetics. We head to the mall to replenish our toiletries and grab some cheap Thai food. As we are walking back we use the internet and find a very cheap accommodation in Karon just across the coast about 15 mins away from Phuket Town. So we choose not commute to the beaches each day and opt to stay in Karon for the next 4 nights.
Karon. We arrive to Karon using the sawngthaew -covered pickup trucks with rows of seats in the back that transport people along set routes, this is the most common way to get around in Thailand, and a heck of a lot cheaper than the rip off tuk tuk and Taxi drivers. The only disadvantage is that they tend to be extremely busy, hence me hanging off the back the whole way with my suitcase! Dumped off on the main road, I zip off to find our Apartment. Karon Noi Hostel… a short walk and we are there. I forgot to mention that our accommodation was very cheap especially for this region of Thailand and Phuket, we couldn't believe it. The Thai lady leads us to our room looking confused, maybe because she doesn't understand us? She opens the door and shows us our room. The lady is looking confused because she is wondering how we are going to share such a small single bed! The next four days are going to be spent top and tailing as it is double the price for a double bed. Jade and I just laugh at one another! I suppose this is this part where i should tell you that is my fault as i did the booking. Our swimming costumes donned, we head straight to Karon beach. Our eyes light up… a beach- We have been deprived of such a treat for a couple of days! Now towels down and I am diving into the clear blue sea, it is so refreshing, with lots of waves crashing on to the golden sand , looking back at the beach and it is packed with tourists…holidaymakers from all over. We quickly realise this is not a backpackers destination ,but a holiday destination(mainly package tours) and I feel that a lot of the Thai culture is lost here which maybe due to this reason? After a lovely afternoon on the beach we explore Karon town and try to find some food but unfortunately we are noticing that here in Karon it is triple the price of anywhere we have experienced in Thailand so far.
The next few days are lost spending most of our time on the beach and eating at our new favourite place…we ended up finding a restaurant which most of the locals eat in, situated at the end of our road. It consisted of an old lady hiding away behind a wok, plastic chairs and old fashioned plastic tablecloths… put all that aside and the food was out of this world , this is where we stumbled across morning glory ! Of all the places we have travelled, this has not been our favourite. Phuket felt like we could have been in any European tourist beach resort. Jade and I will be in no rush to return here as there are far many more beautiful and Idyllic places for us to travel to.
