Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur , The pleasant bus trip from Singapore was great and we made friends with some jolly Pakistani men. Jade and I could see much of the luscious green jungle landscape that dominated much of the journey. Arriving in the middle of the city was daunting as we didn't have a clue how to get from our drop of point to Chinatown, we end up begrudgingly getting into a taxi for what I am sure was an inflated "discount" price. A short ride through the towering skyscrapers and the bustling city centre and we area in the Chinatown district which also was packed with traffic and many people.
Again we are staying in a dormitory room as this is the cheaper option for us and we bagged ourselves a free night from the sister accommodation in Singapore.
So we head straight out into the mixer, it really is busy; markets line the streets, and the lingering smell of sweet and sour in the air really lets you know you are in Chinatown. There are many hawkers selling all kinds. We are rather tired so are trying to find somewhere we can sit and get some energy and indulge in the local delicacies. It isn't hard as your peer through many of the markets you can see the food courts and restaurants tucked in behind.
Jade finds an absolute blinding place to eat… To my annoyance I didn't fancy it but ate in the same food court just not the same vendor, I really had food envy I didn't want to tell her this and so I sat there with my a big grin pretending how delicious my food was!
The weather is scorching and we have our free breakfast on the rooftop terrace which has a beautiful overlooking view down on to a colourful Hindu temple. It is a great place to sit and plan our days out.
Jade uses her great directional skills and map reading to get us to Little India which is just a short walk north of Chinatown and situated in the brickfields area of Kuala Lumpur. Instantly the pungent smells of all the Indian spices linger in the air and there many ladies in their traditional clothes and what a difference from all the Chinese just a short walk away. So many market stalls and so many shops, the shops here sell everything from traditional Indian goods such as saris, flower garlands, spices and Bollywood music, to local delicacies.
Jade and I are starting to take on a real likening to this colourful and lively city, the people here are so friendly all so willing to lend you a helping hand and try out their English speaking skills on you.
We head into the heart of Kuala Lumpur and take the rapid transport system (metro) we get off at the central station and the train station is randomly situated in the middle of a huge mall, we are somewhat bemused by this and take a stroll around the vast space of shops. We notice that it is torrential weather outside and sit to take a look on our map to see where the Petronas towers were. We really haven't got a clue? So more window shopping and few treats later the rain has subsided we head outside to find that this mall was in the centre of these gargantuan towers! Jade and I looked at each other so confused and so amazed. These huge steel structures were just a fantastic sight to behold. Looking up at them made you almost feel a little bit giddy, we just couldn't believe our eyes. The Petronas towers is the 6th largest building in the world and are the the largest twin towers in the world. So now Jade and I have been in the 65th largest building in the world (Baiyoke Tower, Bangkok) and the 6th largest.
Inside the towers we head to the super market to pick up some food so we can sit in the park area that is outside the Petronas Tower. We have some delicious sushi whilst enjoying the view of the park and tower.
Whilst walking back into the towers there is a Bollywood music video being filmed. Asian women writhing up and down the Asian pop star, it was quite funny to watch , Jade was a little bit embarrassed as I was getting my best camera man skills out trying to capture the surreal scene! Back on the train Chinatown inbound.
Chinatown is also a well-known bargain hunter's paradise, a place where you can find all sorts of stuff from Chinese herbs to imitation goods. At night, its main market area, Petaling Street, transforms into a lively and vibrant night market, filled with hundreds of stalls offering all kinds of goods at dirt-cheap prices, and the best thing is, the prices can be brought lower still as haggling is the way of life here, Jade gets out her best haggling skills again and we manage to get a few gifts here for our families as well as a very intricate £3 henna tattoo.
Exhausted after all the haggling we end up back in the same restaurant, you know the one I was quite jealous of Jades meal… there was a vast array of food kind of buffet style with all kinds of delicious goodies to be had and it was so cheap. The night before I was "cutting off the nose off to spite my face" and openly admitted at how good the food was to Jade!
Our bags packed once again and our next stop is the Philippines … Before a night sleeping in the airport, not fun but essential so we don't miss our flight at stupid o'clock in the morning.
