Day 2, January 27 - Chobe Park
We take an early morning Game drive in the Chobe park. We see many Elephants, Hippo and Giraffes - (which are much different from the Serengeti) water buffalo and antelope and so on - nothing too exciting as this is the rainy season and animals go elsewhere in this huge park. It covers 10,566 sq km of northern Botswana. The elephants number about 120,000 and are very destructive. Culls have been considered but not undertaken. We can relax in afternoon - no internet as usual so I slept and then leave for a sunset river boat cruise on the Chobe River which forms a border between Namibia and Botswana. It is beautiful, no rain and we see some crocodiles for the first time. Archaic, creepy things they are! Once back from the cruise, its dinner with wine of course. During dinner, Sandile explained why his father had more than one wife and family. He worked in the mines in South Africa but this was seasonal. Then he had to move back to farm. Instead of moving the family with him - which he couldn't afford, he just had 2 families, so he was not alone. The wives apparently agreed so there you have it. There were no fast food restaurants then so he needed someone to cook and clean for him as the days of work were very long and hard. Sandile says jokingly, I have only one wife - more wives, more problems. Funny.
We have a 680km driving day tomorrow to Maun - ouch.
