A few poems to share from the more frustrating days of travel...
The Lonely Liar of Bolivian Cities
The Lonely Liar misled us you see
On the Bolivian cities of La Paz, Sucre and Potosi
Beautiful they were not
As colonial architecture did rot
Hectic, busy and rude
We found the people nice albeit subdude
Constant noise and heckling about
At times it made us want to shout
But each city did have a lovely centre square
Where you could eat, drink and ponder without care
And one gem from each
Did serve to be its´ peach
La Paz´s witch´s market was unique
Sucre´s dinosaur´s steps, well, were actually rather bleak
Potosi´s mines were truly its wealth
But sadly left many of miners dead or in poor health
We were glad to leave the cities to see the Lagunas Y Salar
And happy the Lonely Planet as true to its´splendor
An Ode to the Buses of Bolivia
Oh buses of Bolivia
How I despised every mile
With your stale air that was completely vile
Crevaza, dirty cloths and bad breath to name a few
Made even more grotesque by horking, sneezing, nose picking and coca leaf chew
Banos-oh-natural meant that dirty hands remained
And personal space was fair game
No heat at 4000M above sea
No bathroom when you want to pee
No working windows when you need fresh air
No seat because they oversold the bus without care
No escape from the constant Bolivian music beat
No refuge from the sale of food vendor´s treat
And on every street
The full bus continued to pick up everyone it would meet
The roads were another story
Each felt like they were blasted from a quarry
Unpaved, barren, pot holed and unsafe
I prayed each reverse to have faith
Oh how I cursed and hated every moment of the ride
And squirmed with each touch of my side
I pondered the germs left on my skin
And sitting on the floor of the isle felt like I could never win
How happy I am not to ride you again
God bless dependable transit systems - AMEN!
