When I first arrived in Sydney I did some silver service waitressing before getting my position at MEA. One of my shifts waitressing was in this room when the Opera House had a special birthday function for their sponsors. It was a lovely evening as I got to hear some lovely classical violin music and enjoyed the wonderful views looking out to Fort Denison and the Botanical Gardens whilst working. This room is named after Jorn Utzon, the architect of Sydney Opera House, who is now again working as the architect. This room is the first room in the Opera House that is first true Utzon Interior as during construction there was a disagreement about budget once the exterior had been built. So Utzon left with the designs and went back to Denmark and to this day has never returned to Sydney. Therefore, an Australian company was brought in to finish the original interior. Designing the room's new interior was Utzon's first major project since his re-engagement by the NSW Government and Sydney Opera House Trust. Formerly known as the Reception Hall, the room was renamed the Utzon Room in his honour, and was officially opened by the Hon. Bob Carr, NSW Premier and Minister for the Arts on September 16, 2004.
