We arrived into Dunedin on a beautiful sunny day, and a day before the remnants of cyclone Gita (no worries mum...all good).
Dunedin is a city with Maori and Scottish heritage. They say the Scottish took to it due to the rocky shore line and similar climate. The city has a large student population and a draw for those who enjoy the city centre and being close to nature’s wonders...you can experience both in a day as they are really only 10-20 minutes away from each other depending on your interests. The University of Otago has approximately 20,000 students and several partnerships with universities aboard for reciprocal course work. The campus itself is central and an awesome mix of the original school buildings from the 1800’s with new modern buildings/structures.
We took advantage of the the nicer day to explore the Otago coastline and Peninsula with a drive out to the lighthouse and albatross colony at Taiaroa Head, as well as a few short track walks. When the rains of Gita arrived we spent our time indoors with the museum, brewery, chocolate factory as well as ducking in and out of central buildings/shops.
