Spent a couple of days in Hue, exploring some of the historical sights including the royal palace (inside a giant walled city) and a rather strange parking lot of gathered US military equipment from the Vietnamese War - including numerous tanks, guns and choppers.
Caught a rather sweaty bus (Open Ticket Bus Co) to Hoi An. This was probably our favourite city to date. Our hostel was centrally located (with AC) and we spent a few wonderful days wandering through the picturesque streets and alleys -famous for tailoring- enjoying the laid back feel and the bourgonvilia which seemed to sprout from every wall. We met up with the locely Sophie one evening (along with a pair of friendly German girls and a crazy young Dutch guy) for a few drinks and a dance.
We were fortunate enough to be in time for Hoi An's full moon celebration, where the town's lights are turned off and lanterns are floated onto the river. Along with our new friends, we ate delicious street food, consisting of spicey noodle soup, and watched the spectacle unfold. It was beautiful!
We also stumbled across a fantastic French bakery, not far from the river, which served THE most incredible tarte au chocolat with carved chocolate flowers on top. The best I'd eaten. Genna had a passion fruit merangue which came pretty close behind!
On our second morning in Hoi An, we rose at 5am to catch a minibus to the ancient temple of My Son for sunrise. The remains were sparse due to US bombing, but there were a couple of temples still in good nick. God, it was hot there though!
On our last day in Hoi An, we rented bicycles and toured about, then headed to the coast which was only 10km away. The beaches were stunning, but we didn't stay long as we had a bus to catch to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).
