Of all the places Ryan and I have been planning to go on our Euro trip, Bruges would be ranked #1 as the most anticipated city. One of our favourite movies is called 'In Bruges' and it is because of this movie we got the idea to visit the historic little town. As soon as we stepped off the train, (1 hour from Brussels), it was like entering a fairy tale. The streets were clean cobbles and with tightly packed homes lining the road. As you entered the centre square, you were surrounded by chocolate shops and horse drawn carriages. There were certain sites that we needed to visit as they were featured in the movie and luckily, we saw everything on our list. We visiting an art gallery with a specific Bosch painting from the movie, climbed the tower, and saw Jesus' blood.
Now we are in Ghent which is just like Bruges, only less touisty. It is once again a beautiful city with canals running though. Every building is unique with different facades...some buildings even have different architectural styles on each side of the building. There is a cathedral, belfry tower, and castle all steps from each other in the city centre. Tim, our CS host here in Ghent, has been the key to introducing us to true Belgian beer. He is quite the beer expert and has helped teach us about the different brew styles and history...I am amazing at how much he knows. Today Ryan and I were going to go to a medieval museum within the castle but with the sun shinning, we opted for walking along the cobble streets and admiring the look of the town.
We have encountered some new things here in Ghent. In Belgium, the glass a beer is served in is almost as important as the brew itself. Every type of beer has a specific glass it should be served in. Ryan and Forest went to a pub where the beer glass was so unique that you had to give your shoe to the bartender in order to order one. I also learned what real hot chocolate is. As the boys were enjoying beer, I ordered a hot chocolate which is a glass of hot steamed milk Belgian chocolate chips on the side. You stir the chocolate into the hot milk to make the hot chocolate milk. From now on, the powdered stuff will never suffice. We still have a few more days to enjoy Belgium which means more beer for Ryan, and more chocolate for me J
