Our Year of Adventure
There wasn't much planned for today apart from take it easy before taking the overnight bus to La Serena. Breakfast was entertaining thanks to David juggling the eggs. He wasn't showing off as such, he just couldn't move an egg from the tray to the pan. He somehow managed to let it smash in the middle of the floor. Once the eggs were safely boiled though, breakfast was more peaceful and enjoyable.
After breakfast, we finished packing and checked out our room. It was a bit of a novelty to pay with credit card, it's the first time since arriving in South America.
Even though we had checked out, we could still use all the facilities at the hostel so while the girls sat out in sun, the boys were indoors watching the Chelsea-Arsenal football match live on the television.
After the game finished, we all headed out to the museum before a planned late lunch. We stopped off at Queso y Olivas for a 'proper' takeaway coffee, the Nescafe (no-es-cafe, as it's jokingly called in Chile) at breakfast just wasn't cutting it.
Museum Gustavo Paige, named in honor of the Belgian priest who spent much of his later life in the area, has a very detailed history of the people of the Atacama region. There used to be mummies and bones on display but they were removed as descendants considered it inappropriate to display their ancestors in that manner and they should rest in peace in their homeland.
We went back to Grado 6 for lunch again. It wasn't very adventurous choosing the same restaurant again but it is just such a good price/quality combo.
After another very satisfying lunch, we went back to the hostel and sat out in sun for a bit before changing to warmer clothing and taking the short walk to the bus station.
Tur-Bus' night bus to La Serena was leaving at 6.45pm and it was going to be a long 16 hour ride, fortunately we had Cama seats which recline to almost a flat bed.
There was a really nice sunset but once it was dark there was nothing much to do apart from sleep. There wasn't even any food served, luckily we had some snacks and had had a big lunch late in the afternoon.
