We set off (again in the rain) (and the mist) travelling thru some quaint irish villages. stopping for coffee at a town called Adare with its thatched houses, one of which had recently caught fire. I guess there is a reason we dont build too many houses these days with thatching for roofs, they tend to burn pretty good. Adare is famous for its geneology records. Managed to find the "lowry" name and brought my brother and my dad a "Lowry" key ring and i got the origins of the Lowry name printed on a scroll, which i have now posted it to dad,. Will be interested to know if it will ever arrive in Australia, but the thought was there :) For those of you who dont know, my maiden name was Lowry, so yes i was of Irish decent, I guess that is where my sad sense of humour comes from.
We lunched in Limerick on the banks of the Shannon river. Of course we managed to find a nice irish pub. I felt like i was in a film set as we sat beside these two elderly irish ladies with such strong accents you thought they were talking another language. They obviously came in every day as the guy in the pub got them their "regular" lunch, while one of them hassled the other that they should try something different. They gossiped about someone being 14 and pregnant, and they gave me my soap opera fix after having missed shortland street for so many weeks.
We arrived at the Cliffs of Moher just ahead of a rain storm. The thing that stood out to us here was again how controlled NZ is. These cliffs have walkways all along them and there are only a few walls and fences. We got photos of some guys leaning right over the edge with their selfie sticks getting their own shots. We put our cameras onto video just incase :)
The cliffs were pretty invigorating, or maybe that was the storm blowing in. It really helps confirm the image of the rugged irish coastline.
The scenery in this area is impressive, all the paddocks are fenced with stone fences, and the countryside is speckled with old castles and ruins.
Dinner tonight was in our hotel and after dinner we sat in the bar and listened to a couple of musicians playing a good variety of music. Whilst a few of the tour joined us, it was again me and Dave the last of our lot to leave. Loved the band, and the wine was pretty nice as well.
