The Sienese wanted to build the largest catheral in Europe. The took on a daunting project that proved to be too much not only for the hilly landscape, but also for the plauge ridden work force two years after construction began. The project was abandoned and extending the nave of the pre-existing cathedral became the new solution. People can climb the phasod and get an amazing view of the whole city.
