Eungella got a good write up in the Lonely Planet and quite rightly it should. It is about 70kms west of Mackay at the end of the Pioneer Valley. Eungella sits atop a mountain and there were views from both the caravan park and the hotel over the valley below. It was a great place to chill out for a few days and that is exactly what we did. Mackay hasn't got much going for it - except perhaps the North Mackay Bowls Club which puts on a good, cheap, all you can eat feed. The marina are was also nice but that was about it. We stayed one night and then headed to Eungella.

We stayed for 2 nights at the Red Rock campground in the Byfield NP which is just north of Yeppoon opposite Great Keppell Island. The campsites were spacious and shady and there was only a couple of other campers at the campground. We left Hervey Bay and headed north to Childers. We stopped here for a walk around the town and some lunch. We stumbled across the memorial for the backpackers who had died in the backpacker fire here some years ago. It was quite moving. From Childers we headed east to Woodgate on the coast. We spent 2 nights at Hervey Bay. We had a heap of washing to do following the wet, damp Fraser Island. We also did a bit of shopping here. It's actually quite a large town and we even got into a traffic jam. I think it's over-populated.
