Feeling very chuffed about finding a boat to Fiji, the next day we decided to hire some transport and go on a road trip to explore the island of Tahiti and investigate if the locals really do wear bones in their noses and eat pale tourists for breakfast. But top of the list was the awesome Teahupoo, one of the most dangerous and famous surf breaks in the world and it just so happens that the best 44 surfers in the world are also competing in the Billabong world champion tour. Woo! We went into the capital Papeete, after breakfast, to find there are no mopeds for hire on the island and a car would cost at least fifty quid for one day. Only one option left, hitchhiking, and it wasn't long before a Polynesian man and his pickup truck stops to find out where we want to go. His name is Mahte and he is not going to Teahupoo but he is happy to drive 50km out of his way to take us there. On the way he practices his English with us, "What is your opinion on immigration, the war in Iraq, Tony Blair and the price of fish"? Halfway into the journey we stop at a shop and he comes out with three beers. Very friendly. At Teahupoo the surf had been too small for a world class competition and has been postponed for the past 9 days. Today was about 4-6 ft and the second round was already under way. We hired a boat for an hour and watched Damien Hobgood battle the local wildcard boy Hira Teriinatoofa. Awesome to watch the wave break onto a 1ft reef, shame it wasn't one of the huge days but we had a great time. On Sunday we officially join the Arslan and his boat. On Wednesday he is planning to compete in a three day, three island regatta, called the Tahiti Pearl Regatta.
