Well hello to everyone finally!!!!!
So we left England 8pm on friday after a very emotional day!!!! i have lost count of the number of times I cried saying goodbye to everyone! We arrived in Bergen after a slight delay with the flight about midnight and heading into the centre on the bus. Turns out we missed our stop as we assumed there would just be one in the centre but there were a few....so by the time we were the last on the bus the driver asked wher e we wanted to go and he took us to the door!!!!!!! The first hostel, Jacobs Appartments were actually really nice. We checked in and dumped the stuff in our room (probably accomdated about 14?). Then headed to the bar adjoined and hada pint of the local beer to celebrate the first night of the trip.....approx 7 pounds!!!!! We headed to bed about 1.30 and we were almost the only people going to bed at this time.....there were loads of other people....mainly girls who were staying in the room but were drinking in the common area first and woke us up prob about 4am banging on the door as their keys werent working. Despite being foreign they kept saying ´bloody hell' with an accent which was rather amusing!!!!!!
Next day we got up at 7.30am (6.30am GMT!!) to make the most of the day as we were planning on getting a lunchtime train to Oslo. We headed to the trainstation and asked about times....there was only one at about 4pm though so we had to wait for that. We were advised to book seats on top of having our Interail passes. After sorting that we headed into the town which is essentially a small harbour. We stopped off in a cafe to grab some breakfast - cinnamon buns seem to be widely available in scandinavia, and me and sam also had a hot chocolate which was actually more like hot milkshake....so made a change!!!! Then we walked aimlessy around the town for a while longer. There were no real attractions in Bergen, but plenty of character. After wondering around the entire town we decided to get the funicular railway up the valley side. At the top there were absolutely stunning views over the harbour. It was quite chilly at the top and this point i was beginning to appreciate my walking boots, fleece and ski jacket! Never did I think I would see the day where I would say that practicality outweighs fashion! hahahha make the most of it as im sure i will never say it when im back on British soil!!!!!
When we got back to the bottom we grabbed some lunch at the harbour, there was a fish market on and various other kiosks so we opted for fish and chips......i must say.....not the best ive ever had and definately not worth the 10 pounds they charged!!!!! After that we went back to the hostel and basically chilled out in the bar where we waited for a couple of hours until we needed to head to the trainstation. I was shattered and promptly fell asleep with my head on the table until Dad phoned to see what we had been up to! then i joined in the card games with sam and karl - rummy & sevens.
At the train station we realised there was some engineering works and so there were some bus replacement services. Unlike england tho the replacement services were actually really nice coaches. I think we appreciated the break up in the journey and the route we took may have been preferable to the train as the views were out of this world. The landscape is basically the Norwegian Fjords and goes very high above sea level. I will try and upload some pictures but i cant remember how many i actually took! Once we got on the train we were chuffed with the seats we had been allocated - 3 private ones all with reading lights, headphone sockets and foldaway wooden tables. Oh and not forgetting reclinable chairs!!!!!
The train journey took 7 hours but it wasnt that tedious to be honest and actually quite enjoyable. We arrived in Oslo about 11pm. I shall write about Oslo in a seperate blog .
Thanks for all your messages on the message board I shall try and get back to you all individually.....its just finding the time! Love to you all! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
