We left the Cameron Highlands on the 8am bus which actually did run and wasn't running too late!!! We passed some amazing scenery and the tea plantations literally looked like a green carpet. The journey didn't take long at all - again I slept a lot of it!!!
In Kuala Lumpur we were dropped off on the side of a road (now transpires this was next to the main bus station - but at the time we didn't realise this so we took the easy option and got a taxi to the hostel!) After checking in to our 12 bed dorm we headed out for some lunch. The weather at the time was scorching - and to top it off really muggy so for comfort's sake we went into a massive air conditioned shopping mall and got food. Afterwards we headed back to the hostel, and did boring washing stuff before heading out again down to the 'Times Square' shopping mall in search of a guide book for OZ in preparation and then onto the bus station to look for tickets. After faffing for what would have probably been 2-3 hours we eventually got tickets for 50RMB (10 pounds) to get us down to Singapore. As we were walking back to the hostel it started raining which was actually really nice because it wasn't too heavy and cooled us down! At the hostel I used up my phone card from Penang on phoning the family and then went for dinner at an Indian restaurant next door. It was more like a canteen in appearance and the prices reflected that but the food was really good - Naan set (Naan, dhaal and tandoori chicken) and drink all for about 3 pounds.
The next day we got up early so we could go and queue for tickets to the Petronas Towers as they go quickley (they are free). We were however woken up in the middle of the night by a guy in one of the beds in our dorm shouting 'GUYs!!!!' His friend asked what the problem was and his response was that he didn't know where he was having woken in the dark after a nightmare. It was so amusing at the time, especially recalling the story to him over breakfast!!!! We went to the Petronas Towers and managed to get tickets for the 4.15pm time slot. In the meantime (from 9.30am) we looked around the shopping mall at the bottom of the towers and walked a really long way round to the KL Tower which is their taller viewing tower. It cost something ridiculous like 10 pounds to get up, and having already got (free) tickets up the Petronas we decided not to bother. By the time we got back to the Petronas Towers (via a more direct route) we were really hot and bothered so went and got ice cream!!! We looked around the shopping mall some more and the gardens outside before getting lunch, looking round the mall some more and going for a bridge tower slot. It started off with a 5 minute 3D video which was basically just advertising for Petronas (the oil/fuel company) and then went up the lift for 10 minutes on the bridge! The views were good and the building we decided was amazing. From the top we could even see the evening rain coming!!! Got back to the hostel and met up with John and Aicha (who we met in the hostel in Beijing and randomly turned up in KL!). We went out for another Naan set with them and then back to the hostel for the evening.
Our second full day in KL was our last and we spent most of the day in the colonial district looking around Merdeka Square and then China Town where we got an amazing lunch. It was a lonely planet recommendation and on first impressions most people would pass this by as again its canteen looking without a western face in sight. We persevered though and I ordered Beef curry and Briyani rice and it was absolutely delicious. Afterwards we went back to the hostel and chilled for a while we planned our basic route in OZ then went back to China Town to meet John and Aicha for our last night (which also coincided with Chinese New Year). There were no apparent celebrations - and having recalled what Lucy our Chinese Tour Guide said we think its more a traditional family get together of the generations for a large meal. We went to a Chinese restaurant and had a nice meal and then got the monorail back to the hostel before going to bed.
